SafARI
An ‘unofficial’ fringe event to the Biennale of Sydney, SafARI generates an increased awareness of emerging and unrepresented artists. It also aims to highlight the whereabouts of ARIs and provides a forum for discussion, discovery and professional development for all involved. Founded in 2004 by Lisa Corsi and Margaret Farmer, SafARI has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the arts community, international visitors and the media.
Art & About for Sydney Statues, Oh Alfred! and the Laneway Art project
Art & About kicked off 2010 with Laneways by George! Hidden Networks, which invited interdisciplinary teams to transform Sydney’s laneways with a series of innovative installation artworks. Later in the year came Sydney Statues, the brainchild of Michelle McCosker and produced by Imogen Semmler, which treated us all to a series of dressed up and flamboyantly decorated historic Sydney statues. Meanwhile, in another part of town, Jess Cook and Kali Reid worked with local residents and artists to create Oh Alfred! a project that turned the fencing around Prince Alfred Park into a giant public artwork using found and salvaged material.
Sydney Open
Sydney Open is a biennial event presented by Historic Houses Trust that showcases Sydney’s architecture. For one day only people have the opportunity to go behind the scenes in their own city exploring over 50 buildings and sites normally off limits. From architectural icons to secret and hidden places, award-winning contemporary designs to much-loved heritage buildings, industrial shells to creative adaptations and state-of-the-art sustainable living projects, Sydney Open opens your eyes to the past, present and future of Sydney’s built environment.
Breakfast On The Bridge
On Sunday October 10 this year, 6000 people, chosen by ballot, enjoyed the unique Breakfast On The Bridge. Part of Crave Sydney International Food Festival, the event turned Australia’s most famous icon green as grass was rolled out along the road deck to create probably the best picnic spot ever.
Macquarie Visions (Vivid Light)
Macquarie Visions was a free public event that used immersive light displays to celebrate the 200th anniversary and story of two visionary leaders: Governor Lachlan Macquarie and his wife Elizabeth. The walk included a dazzling light spectacle at St Mary’s Cathedral, installations at Hyde Park Barracks Museum, The Mint, Parliament House, The State Library of New South Wales, The Royal Botanic Garden’s Palace Garden Gate and Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with special features including the spectacular Downer Macquarie Arch and the stunning illumination of the Opera House sails.
